Portsmouth approach Newcastle United over Alex Murphy transfer

Portsmouth have approached Newcastle United over a deal for Alex Murphy, according to Mark Douglas.

The journalist reported in his column for The I newspaper’s online edition [19 August] that Pompey are one of a number of interested clubs.

Murphy is capable of playing centre-back and left-back, while he has already made a couple of Premier League appearances.

Alex Murphy transfer links make sense for Portsmouth

Bringing in a player who can cover a couple of positions is always a massive positive when scouring the market for new recruits.

While Murphy is not exactly a big name, he is clearly a player with a bright future as he has top-flight games to his name despite being just 20.

The youngster has also been capped by the Republic of Ireland at various age grade levels, including the Under-21s.

Given he is likely way down the pecking order at St James’ Park, it would make sense for Murphy to find another club to play more regularly.

Whether that is for the short-term on loan, or a permanent exit, is unclear. Either way, this is a move that makes sense for Portsmouth.

With just nine days of the transfer window to go, let’s hope this is a rumour that leads to something more concrete.
