Dan Bardell questions Paul Dummett hunger amid Portsmouth transfer links

Dan Bardell says he is unsure about Paul Dummett’s hunger for football, following links to Portsmouth.

The left-back has been a free agent since departing Newcastle United in the summer, having left alongside Matt Ritchie who has since returned to Fratton Park.

Head coach John Mousinho issued an update on Wednesday regarding Dummett, whom the club continue to monitor but with no further movement as yet.

Bardell, speaking exclusively to Pompey News, said: “He’s an experienced player, he knows the Championship having played there with Newcastle.

“However, he has sat there waiting for his contract to run down and hasn’t really played any football – does he have the hunger to play? Because that’s what Portsmouth need, players who will buy into what they’re doing.

“But on a free transfer, if he can be signed on a relatively low wage, he could be a good pickup for them.”

Portsmouth move for Paul Dummett?

Dummett is a name with calibre if Portsmouth were to attract him, given his wealth of Premier League experience – in a similar way to long-time teammate Ritchie.

It would be a huge move for the 32-year-old if he was to come to the South Coast, having remained local for much of his career.

Through a mixture of injuries and Eddie Howe’s pecking order, however, Dummett has played just eight league games in the last three seasons.

There was never any concrete talk of a loan move to get regular football during this period, so based on Bardell’s point, maybe it would not be the kind of deal Pompey would pursue at this time.

Mousinho is fairly stocked in the left-back area, albeit nursing an injury to Jacob Farrell whilst Connor Ogilvie is playing in that position – which does make choices a little fragile.
