Haji Mnoga set to seal Portsmouth exit with medical passed ahead of League Two transfer
Portsmouth defender Haji Mnoga is on the verge of signing for Salford City on a free transfer and has passed a medical, according to Sky Sports News.
Pete Graves reported in Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (30 August) that the Tanzania international right-back is “close” to joining the League Two side after his contract at Fratton Park expired this summer.
Mnoga featured for his country at the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2024, but these appearances came during a loan spell from Pompey at National League side Aldershot Town.
The 22-year-old has only made 18 first-team appearances for Pompey since his debut in 2018, 10 of which came in the EFL Trophy, and the last of these came back in December 2022 before his release.
Haji Mnoga ready to close chapter on Portsmouth career
Having not featured once under John Mousinho’s tutelage at Fratton Park, the writing has been on the wall for some time where Mnoga is concerned, and he was never likely to earn a new contract.
The right-back’s loan spells since his last first-team appearance have both seen him head down two divisions to Aldershot, after a brief spell at League Two’s Grimsby Town in the autumn of 2022.
Moving on a free transfer to Salford therefore represents a step up for Mnoga and a move back to the fourth tier.
Salford were battling relegation for much of the previous campaign, and Mnoga will be keen to do his bit to help the Ammies avoid slipping back into the National Leagues.
Though his time at Pompey is up, Mnoga remains a full international after making his debut for his hometown club at just 16, and both sides of this deal will wish each other well once his move is sealed.
