David Norris drops ‘dip of the toe’ verdict on Portsmouth transfer spending
Portsmouth did not spend enough in the transfer window and merely “dipped their toes” in, says former midfielder David Norris.
Pompey brought in 14 senior signings in the summer window and whilst Norris agrees they have strengthened the squad, would have liked to see the club be a little more daring.
John Mousinho’s side have returned to the Championship for the first time since the 43-year-old played for the club in the 2011-12 season.
Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, Norris said: “When you look at what they’ve spent, it’s a dip of the toe really, maybe fans expected a little more money spent.
“I’m not saying that’s a negative as the club do need that stability, but it’s clear the way Pompey have tried to go about things in the summer.
“I do think some of the youngsters they’ve brought in will do well, and then after that you’re banking on a couple of gems from abroad.”
Portsmouth slowly building a capable team
Portsmouth are in the process of compiling a squad which can compete at Championship level, without breaking the bank – a common theme for newly promoted sides.
With Pompey’s financial ghosts of the past, it’s easy to understand why the club have played a cautious approach, looking for bargains as they bolster themselves with experience of the league.
In the midst of that, some interesting young players have been brought in, both on loan and as purchases – these are clear investments for the future who the club need to continue to develop, not expecting too much too soon.

In all, the Blues spent roughly around £2m, which is a drop in the ocean compared to other competitors in the division, but probably a smart move when you step back and see the bigger picture.
Consolidate, build, go again.
