‘Massive Blow’ – Mousinho reveals Portsmouth ace to miss six-plus months

John Mousinho has revealed that Portsmouth summer signing Ibane Bowat will miss at least the next six months with a serious knee injury.

Bowat, who made the switch to Fratton Park from Fulham for an undisclosed fee in August, ruptured his patella tendon in training last week.

The 22-year-old has had a slow start to life at the club and will not feature for Pompey until at least March as he recovers from the injury setback.

“It’s not good news with Ibane,” Mousinho is quoted as saying by The News [15 September]. “He’s ruptured his patella tendon and it’s a freak one.

“He’s gone down after trying to take a shot in a small-sided game and he’s going to be looking at six months out. It’s a massive blow for that to happen without him even setting foot on the football pitch for us.

“We’re really devastated but it’s one of those things which happens in football. Just as we get players back and it’s looking healthy on the injury front that happens. So we’ll review it as always and go from there.”

Portsmouth suffer Ibane Bowat setback

Bowat was expected to push for a starting spot in Portsmouth’s defence this season following his move from Premier League side Fulham.

However, after failing to appear across the first five matches in all competitions, Mousinho confirmed last week his plan was to ease the youngster in.

Due to a limited pre-season programme, Bowat needed time to get fully up to speed before he could make his Portsmouth bow.

However, this “freak” injury he sustained in training has delayed his debut by another six months. It goes without saying it is a big blow for Pompey, and even more so for the player himself.

Fratton Park, Portsmouth

Bowat enjoyed regular first-team football with Austrian Bundesliga side TSV Hartberg last season, but any momentum has now been completely halted.

If nothing else, at least he will feel like a new signing to Mousinho once he does eventually don the Pompey kit in 2025.
