Glen Little impressed with Portsmouth start despite winless Championship run

Glen Little says Portsmouth have not had as poor a start as the Championship table may suggest.

Pompey occupy 23rd position in the division above only managerless Cardiff City ahead of this weekend’s contest with Sheffield United at Fratton Park.

Despite being without a win, John Mousinho’s side have gained some credible draws and have played exclusively promotion candidates so far this season.

Little represented the Blues for a single season in 2008-09 and played in the Europa League at Fratton, and told BBC Radio Solent’s Andy Moon and Chris Wise [25 September]: “Burnley got lucky in the end at the weekend and looking at the fixture list for Portsmouth, it’s been some start.

“I’ve been following the results but when you actually study the fixture list, the first seven are the three teams that have come down, along with Leeds, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and West Brom.

“I don’t think it’s been as bad as the table might suggest, and they’ll be alright.”

Portsmouth look forward to next block of fixtures

With players coming and going through injury and the transfer window, and an adaptation job to the new division for a lot of those who had not yet played in the Championship, it has been tricky for Portsmouth.

After Sheffield United, Pompey face Stoke, Oxford, QPR, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday – a quintet of games you might be fancying the side to get a decent return from.

Without the two-point deduction the Blades had prior to the season, they would be third in the league and are still unbeaten heading to the South Coast.

If the Championship is true to its historical type, this would be the perfect chance to flip the statistics on their head and inflict a first defeat on Chris Wilder’s side.

A tantalising clash will be followed by some respite from the fixture list, but Mousinho will know there is zero room to take their foot off the gas.
