Mousinho issues Shaughnessy injury update in further blow for Portsmouth
Conor Shaughnessy will miss this week’s games for Portsmouth as he undergoes another scan, John Mousinho has confirmed.
The defender has not featured since the goalless draw with Luton Town on 17 August, with a persistent calf issue stunting his return.
Shaughnessy was in line to start against Sheffield United on Saturday (28 September) but was withdrawn late in the warm-up just before kick-off after it flared up again, and now another thorough medical check will take place.
Mousinho, speaking to BBC Radio Solent’s Ian Wilding [1 October], explained: “Conor won’t be available this week.
“He’ll be going for another scan, but it’s a recurrence of the same injury.”
Portsmouth await further Conor Shaughnessy details
Portsmouth have not had the rub of the green so far this season regarding injuries, with a ‘whack-a-mole’ environment currently plaguing Mousinho in his squad selection.
When players do return, others appear to flag in what is a concern for the medical department at Fratton Park, and Shaughnessy – who had been a near-constant in the club’s success last season – is a sore miss.
To the credit of Pompey’s other centre-halves, they have stepped up to the plate well in certain games and none more so than at the weekend against a threatening Sheffield United outfit – Tom McIntyre in particular deserving of plaudits after replacing Shaughnessy at the 11th hour.
Fortunately for Mousinho, his enlarged squad has come in very handy, swollen to the point that three senior players had to be culled from the 25-man official EFL squad submission.
With two games in the space of four days, the demand is becoming more rampant for the Blues and Shaughnessy’s return – whenever it may come – will be a welcome relief.
In other Portsmouth news, the head coach was thrilled with Jacob Farrell’s debut.
