Finance Expert moots John Mousinho release clause at Portsmouth after contract development
John Mousinho’s new contract at Portsmouth will likely include a release clause, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Pompey announced in an official statement earlier this season that the 38-year-old and sporting director Richard Hughes had put pen to paper on new deals at Fratton Park to extend their stay with the club [BBC Sport, 20 September].
While the exact details of the new contract aren’t yet clear, Plumley expects that the club will have included a “smart” compensation clause to try and ward other teams away from Mousinho.
“I think that’s likely,” Plumley exclusively told Portsmouth News.
“We’ve seen other examples of clubs doing this. West Brom have a clause for Carlos Corberan around £4million.
“It’s likely nowadays that when managers are signing extensions, there’s probably some sort of release clause in there as well.
“It’s a testament to where the club has been to where they are now and Mousinho has obviously been a big part of that.
“But nowadays, I think it’s going to become more of the norm that if you see managers signing extensions or if clubs are looking to pin managers down when their stock is rising a little bit, there’s probably some sort of compensation fee baked into that.
“My personal opinion on that is it’s pretty smart because you’re looking to protect the manager for your club to the best of your ability.
“It’s never foolproof because clubs might pay the release clause, but it is a good strategy to employ to try and keep a manager and keep some of that continuity when there has been growth at the football club over the last few years.”
Will John Mousinho exit Fratton Park after Portsmouth contract update?
While Pompey haven’t had the best start in the Championship, it would be naive to lay all that blame at Mousinho’s door.

The 38-year-old deserves plenty of credit for guiding Portsmouth back to England’s second tier last season and there is still a good chance that he could help them dodge the drop this term.
Hopefully, a combination of his new deal and the club’s winless start to the league campaign will ensure that no other clubs come knocking to try and prize him away from Fratton Park in the near future.
