Freddie Potts shares immediate Portsmouth goal after first Championship win this season
Freddie Potts insists Portsmouth are aiming for six points from the next two Championship games.
Pompey finally got the ball rolling on their season by coming from behind to win 2-1 at Loftus Road against Queens Park Rangers, as Potts equalised with his first goal for the club.
Speaking to BBC Radio Solent’s Andy Moon [19 October], the West Ham loanee believes his side can secure a maximum return from Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday in the coming days.
“We performed well, we worked hard and we’re obviously glad to get that first win. The fans were unbelievable, and my family were in the crowd,” he said.
“There are two games this week, but two games in which we believe we can get six points. Especially off the back of [Saturday], we’re coming into the games with a lot of confidence.
“We’re really excited as a group.”
Freddie Potts gets off the mark in first Portsmouth win
Portsmouth maintains a lot of historical relevance with the word “victory”, but had to wait until 19 October to finally get a three-point haul on the board.
John Mousinho’s side put in a rugged display reminiscent of that which has earned respectable draws away at some of the EFL’s powerhouses, only this time seeing out the full job.
Potts, only 21 last month, has etched his name into the first-choice Pompey XI ahead of fellow new signing Andre Dozzell, partnering Marlon Pack in the middle of the pitch with Mousinho unlikely now to tweak his side too much, if at all.
There remains a family history at Fratton Park with older brother Dan, having represented the club in some of its darkest days in 2013 while himself a young starlet – going on to play over 200 times for Luton Town.
The rigorous Championship schedule is well underway with matches showing themselves every three days, but a win does wonders for the mentality of a squad who were beginning to forget what it feels like after last season’s breathtaking showing.
