Portsmouth Women take positives as Hannah Coan reacts to Bristol City defeat
Portsmouth Women’s Hannah Coan has discussed the importance of taking the positives after a narrow defeat by Bristol City on Sunday [20 October].
The defender, speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel [20 October], said while the 1-0 loss in the West Country was disappointing, there are still elements to build positively on as the Blues remain in search of Championship points.
Following Sheffield United’s latest win, Pompey are now in their own company at the foot of the table, pointless after seven league games.
“It was a positive performance, but it was disappointing to concede in the first half with a similar goal to those we’ve conceded this season,” Coan said.
“We were in the game and we’re disappointed not to have come away with anything. We dominated a lot of the second half but we need to create more clear-cut chances.
“We had the message at the break to play to our strengths and try and get in behind, but we can build on this game as a group. We’re working hard on the training pitch, and hopefully, it’ll come soon.”
Portsmouth Women need to get off the mark
Recent results have had head coach Jay Sadler tearing his hair out and giving scathingly honest post-match assessments of his Portsmouth side.
However, the trip to Ashton Gate was far from the abysmal thrashings the Blues have suffered and they arguably should have won the game, let alone taken a maiden point.
There is evidence beginning to show of the squad adapting to the new demands, but as the Championship is showing, there is little margin for dwelling on results and you have to keep moving with the nature of the league.
Sheffield United had, for the past six games, accompanied Pompey without a point at the foot of the table, from which just one club gets relegated come the end of the season – but their away win at Coan’s former club Blackburn Rovers has kickstarted their campaign.
Following the international break, Sadler’s Blues meet the Blades next on home turf on 10 November in what will be an intriguing battle.
