John Mousinho: Portsmouth fans didn’t see what they deserved v Cardiff City

John Mousinho has admitted the Portsmouth fans did not deserve to witness the performance his side put in against Cardiff City.

Pompey missed the chance to build on the weekend win at QPR by slipping to a 2-0 defeat in South Wales on Tuesday night [22 October], condemning the side to the foot of the Championship table for the first time.

Mousinho, speaking to the club’s official channels [22 October], gave an honest assessment as he confessed the display was nowhere near Saturday’s standard.

“Portsmouth fans can take losing games, if they see a side that’s recognisable,” the head coach explained.

“If for whatever reason we lost the game at the weekend, there would [still] have been a lot of positivity around it.

“That’s the disappointment for me – I don’t think the fans saw anywhere near what they deserved to see from the side.”

Portsmouth struggling to adapt in Championship

Portsmouth now have to take a good look in the mirror – the tough early fixtures context wears thinner for every match the Blues take on bottom-half opponents.

Cardiff, albeit off the back of a 5-0 win at the weekend, should not be sweeping aside Mousinho’s men in the way they did – the game was over before half-time, coupled with two more injury blows.

Almost half of the first-team squad have been affected by an injury woe of some kind during this season – some of them long-term – and at Championship level, it cannot be dwelled upon as teams, no matter their place in the table, will pick you apart.

Pompey are now rock-bottom with eight points, and complete October with another quick turnaround, hosting Sheffield Wednesday under the Fratton Park lights on Friday night [25 October].

Defeat to the Owls, and the team and management will certainly feel the wrath of the Blues fanbase who expect at least something better than Tuesday night.
