Portsmouth reveal latest on three injury concerns on night to forget in Cardiff

John Mousinho has revealed the initial news on a triple injury concern which plagued Portsmouth in their defeat to Cardiff City on 22 October.

Paddy Lane was forced off 15 minutes into his first start since 2 October with an Achilles problem, before Nicolas Schmid suffered blurred vision and had to be replaced by Jordan Archer for his debut.

Jordan Williams did not emerge for the second half after taking a knock to his hip flexor in a duel – for which the Pompey defender was penalised.

Mousinho, speaking to The News [22 October], said: “I don’t know how bad it is [with Lane’s Achilles].

“Jordan Williams injured his hip flexor in the challenge which somehow resulted in a free-kick for Cardiff.

“Nico took a whack when we conceded the second goal and had a bit of blurred vision, so came off – the lights maybe didn’t help. It wasn’t concussion, so we’ll see if he’s available for Friday.”

Portsmouth will be patched up heading into Sheffield Wednesday

Portsmouth have a large squad – and that has saved their season from descending into utter catastrophe.

The Blues are now bottom of the Championship and relegation fears are spreading throughout the fanbase, even after claiming that elusive first win against QPR [19 October].

But if Mousinho had been working with a squad any smaller, it would have been a wonder where Pompey could even have found a point, having seen 14 first-team players injured in the opening two-and-a-half months of the campaign.

If Schmid is not risked on Friday night against Sheffield Wednesday [25 October], Archer will be in line for his first Pompey start with Will Norris also absent.

Zak Swanson remains a doubt after missing the Cardiff clash but could be rushed back to fill in for Williams – Ryley Towler is another option but would require a re-jig of the backline; Christian Saydee will likely replace Lane in the starting XI.

In other Portsmouth news, the club receive a fine from the FA due to this incident.
