John Mousinho hits out after Portsmouth defeat v Sheffield Wednesday

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho admits his side have not adapted to the step up to the Championship well enough so far this season.

Pompey – promoted with the League One title under Mousinho last season – sit bottom of the table after 12 games, having taken just an eight-point return and lost a half-time lead to lose 2-1 against Sheffield Wednesday on 25 October.

Mousinho, speaking on Sky Sports after the loss at Fratton Park, is not happy with what he has seen.

“We’re pretty thin at the moment and the injuries haven’t helped,” he said.

“But if you speak to every head coach or manager up and down the country, they all have these issues.

“We have to deal with those issues better going forward; we haven’t dealt with it well enough or dealt with the step up well enough.”

Portsmouth have to turn things around

Portsmouth are left all this week to lick their wounds, having failed to follow up on any momentum from their win at QPR on 19 October.

That maiden victory was hard-earned and gave Pompey fans a sense of optimism which had so far been lacking since returning to the second tier.

But a weak display at Cardiff City was then followed up by handing Sheffield Wednesday their lead, albeit with question marks over Josh Windass’ equaliser, and conceding a stunning strike to Michael Smith.

Hull City at the MKM Stadium [2 November] is next up, a team who have had a mixed record but will be approaching the game with their own confidence upon seeing Pompey’s position in the table.

Injuries have plagued Mousinho’s side, but the head coach offered the only response he could after the Wednesday defeat and admitted fellow competitors are also dealing with the same problems.
