Lily Dent describes Portsmouth Women disappointment despite what happened
Portsmouth Women star Lily Dent has described the feeling of her first goal this season, but admitted the team are still disappointed not to have beaten Sheffield United.
Dent’s equaliser at Westleigh Park earned Pompey their first-ever point in the Championship, against a Blades side who have also been struggling.
Speaking to the official Portsmouth Women YouTube channel [10 November], Dent said it is now a springboard to push on and fight for survival.
“It’s nice to score and get our first point, but to be honest there is still a bit of disappointment in the girls as it was a six-pointer game,” she said.
“The way the game went, we definitely could have taken three. But the second half is a performance to push on from and this week now is huge.
“The crowd were brilliant, I’ve never heard a crowd erupt so much as after we scored here. It was like a release of relief.”
Portsmouth Women finally off the mark
When Jay Sadler’s side came off the pitch at Westleigh on Sunday trailing, the players and fans would have wondered what more they needed to do and when a point was ever going to come.
As it turned out, Portsmouth dominated the second half and were unlucky not to complete the comeback following Dent’s goal after 64 minutes.
Chances came and went, and the Blades’ confidence diminished, but to be frustrated despite not losing for the first time is at least a mark of development and confidence for the newly professional outfit.
The Blues had waited three weeks to face off again in the league and had clearly been well drilled by the coaching staff during that time on the training pitch.
Next up comes a trip north to another struggling side in Blackburn Rovers [17 November], before a second South Coast derby of the campaign against Southampton in the League Cup group stage [24 November].
