Journalist backs Elias Sorensen loan exit in January after Portsmouth struggles

Portsmouth should find a loan spell for Elias Sorensen in January as he struggles for game time, Jordan Cross has said.

Speaking on Pompey Talk [15 November], The News journalist backed a temporary exit for the Dane, who only signed in the summer for a fee of around £250,000 from Esbjerg.

Sorensen scored on his debut against Leeds United at Elland Road [10 August], but has since struggled for minutes and has failed to score, including a costly missed penalty against Oxford United.

“Colby Bishop’s back and firing, Yengi’s there, O’Mahony, too,” Cross said. “Saydee is in the mix as well. I’d perhaps send Sorensen out on loan.

“There’s one too many there for Pompey anyway, in terms of strikers – I think that’s the way they’ll see it. The Sorensen signing was a reaction to Colby [his heart surgery news in July].

“Obviously, the caveat to that is if Yengi’s not delivering, and Colby doesn’t come back as well as he could.”

Portsmouth to decide next move for Elias Sorensen

It’s fair to say Sorensen’s impact has been underwhelming, though many did suspect the step up from the Danish third division last season to the Championship in England would be a mountain to climb.

The goal at Leeds – an accolade he can enjoy as Pompey’s first Championship goal since 2012 – was well taken, but despite his hard work, there was seldom much involvement for Sorensen during the rest of his time on the pitch.

Deservedly given the benefit of the doubt, he has failed to take his opportunities since and has recently been out of the matchday squad entirely.

With Bishop now back fit, Yengi and O’Mahony as central striker options and the likes of Christian Saydee and Callum Lang who can operate there, it is unlikely Sorensen will see things changing.

The former Newcastle United prospect, now 25, needs regular football and a loan move for him and several others in January is likely the best course of action.

In other Portsmouth news, Michael Eisner says the club will categorically not be relegated back to League One.
