England Under-19s make announcement on Portsmouth Women duo
Portsmouth Women have a rare moment to celebrate this season as two of the Blues’ squad have been called up for the England Under-19 Lionesses.
Eve Annets and Lily Dent have both received the nod for the U19s, who face three qualifying matches towards the Women’s Under-19 European Championships [England Lionesses on X, 20 November].
Goalkeeper Annets and midfielder Dent have been two of Pompey’s better performers in a tough season so far, and will be part of the squad to face Turkiye [27 November], Italy [30 November] and Poland [3 December].
First up, the main focus for Jay Sadler and his side is the second South Coast derby of the season this Sunday [24 November], in the League Cup group stage against Southampton – who claimed a 5-0 win at Fratton Park in the last meeting last month.
Portsmouth Women pair called up for England
In a demanding campaign which has so far left Portsmouth bottom of the Women’s Championship with a single point and just two league goals, this is a rare moment of joy.
Jay Sadler is right now attempting to not only navigate this season towards survival, but also maintain as many of his young charges in a professional environment at Pompey for as long as possible.
This does not apply to Annets and Dent, both of whom are at Westleigh Park on loan from Manchester City and Brighton respectively.
The teenagers have quickly become regulars in Sadler’s side, as Dent scored against Sheffield United to get the Blues’ first-ever Championship point on the board.
Annets earned plaudits from Pompey Women fans after the maturity with which she analysed the defeat to fellow promoted side Newcastle United some weeks ago.
