Dan Plumley explains Portsmouth financial reality after what Andy Cullen said

Portsmouth cannot compare financially to some of the league’s top clubs and CEO Andy Cullen was right to relay the facts, says Dan Plumley.

Cullen recently admitted to supporters that there cannot be a realistic comparison to the likes of Leeds United, whose funds in the Championship dwarf that of Pompey.

The Blues have returned to the second tier for the first time since an administration-stricken season in 2011-12.

“That’s going to be the case for a club like Portsmouth. Promotion will have netted them around £7million in revenue terms,” finance expert Plumley exclusively told Pompey News.

“But you have clubs in that league who have had the benefit of parachute payments and TV money, £90m spread out over three years. It’s a completely different playing field.

“While competing in the same league, Leeds and Portsmouth cannot be compared. It’s good for me that the CEO is coming out and speaking in these terms. That’s the financial reality.”

Portsmouth spending within their means

The fate of Portsmouth this season could hinge on what the club do in the January transfer window, as projected by many in the media.

Pompey were not involved in any huge fees despite their significant squad rebuild, spending short of £5m in the summer window while bringing in 14 senior players.

The likes of Leeds, Burnley and Sheffield United have all been able to sell players for massive sums, which has bolstered their cash reserve further.
