Ian Darke makes Portsmouth transfer plea amid ‘foolish’ verdict

Portsmouth must fight “tooth and nail” to maintain their status in the Championship by using the January transfer window wisely, says Ian Darke.

Pompey currently sit 23rd in the table ahead of Wednesday night’s [27 November] return to action against Millwall at Fratton Park.

TV commentator and Blues fan Darke, exclusively speaking to Pompey News, says it would be “foolish and wasteful in the extreme” to be tight with funds.

“Their place in the Championship is a really hard-earned place. It’s taken years to get back there and League One was a long spell,” he said.

“I don’t see Pompey making clubs offers for their players that they can’t refuse, but they do have to act.

“It would be foolish and wasteful in the extreme really to let it go easily, and they have to fight tooth and nail, open up the pursestrings a bit.”

Portsmouth under pressure to deliver in January

Portsmouth must ensure they do not fall straight back through the trap door to League One after all the years of obscurity were finally waved farewell.

Pompey signed 14 first-team players in a major squad overhaul, to mixed levels of success, but the club still did not break the £5million mark with their transfer net spend.

Where the Blues have prioritised is huge refurbishment work to Fratton Park, Copnor Road and their infrastructure around the city.
