Don Goodman urges Portsmouth to be active in the January transfer window
Don Goodman believes Portsmouth will “fall away” if they fail to strengthen their squad in the upcoming January transfer window.
Pompey sit bottom of the Championship having made their return to the division in the summer following an impressive League One campaign.
However, it hasn’t been the fairytale return many dreamed of with just two wins in 13 fixtures so far and Goodman has told Pompey News they must use the January window to improve the squad or it could be a swift return to the second tier.
Goodman said: “I’m not looking at the players that they brought in in the summer, and there were plenty of them, and thinking they’ve had a real positive impact on that team. And that’s, at this moment in time, that’s what will disappoint John Mousinho the most. So if there is money to spend they need to spend it to improve their side.
“They’re gonna have to find a way of improving in both boxes, ultimately. Otherwise, they will fall away. But they’re going into a run of fixtures now, which on paper look very attractive in terms of them being able to pick up a decent amount of points. And if they can get that momentum going, it breeds confidence, and all of a sudden, you’re looking at a different scenario.“
January could be a make or break for Portsmouth
The recent return of Colby Bishop has perhaps suppressed some of the attacking concerns the club have faced since the start of the campaign but there is no denying Pompey must improve in January.
Only two sides have conceded more than Mousinho’s side with only four scoring less. Their concerns lie at both ends of the pitch and failure to address them could result in their return to League One, which would be incredibly harsh given how long-awaited a Championship comeback was.
Of course, the league table doesn’t tell a lot at this stage of the season, especially off the back of two match postponements, the most recent one against Millwall.

However, their lack of cutting-edge and poor ability to prevent opposition goals will be detrimental if they fail to address it and January provides an excellent opportunity to do so.
There is enough quality in this Pompey side to stay in the Championship but only if they can find that extra bit of ability in both boxes.
