Portsmouth should not let managerial sackings affect them – David Norris

David Norris says Portsmouth should not fear rival clubs getting a “new manager bounce” if they decide to make changes during poor form.

Four managers in the Championship have so far faced the chop this season, the most recent of which coming Tim Walter’s way at Hull City following a short stint in charge.

Norris acknowledges the “new manager bounce” can be a key factor in achieving league survival, but believes Pompey should not give outside uncontrollable events a second thought.

“Of course, changing managers is something to consider with rivals, and Portsmouth certainly won’t neither shouldn’t do it anytime soon,” the former Blues midfielder told Pompey News.

“There tends to be a bounce and clubs do often benefit in the short-term from appointing a new manager. And then there are clubs where it’s reminded that if their manager gets sacked, anyone can get it. Coventry are the big recent example.

“I don’t see it affecting Pompey too much, though, if any of the sides around them make a change. Rivals might get two or three wins out of it and be back to square one and Pompey will still compete and be in and around it.”

Portsmouth survival battle will become clearer after January

Everyone now knows it is very likely Portsmouth will be embroiled in a huge relegation fight this season, but with whom remains unclear until further into the campaign.

The January transfer window will be a key indicator with many tipping this to be the most integral factor in establishing Pompey as a Championship outfit in the long term.
