Don Goodman backs Josh Murphy to keep improving for Portsmouth

Don Goodman has been impressed with the form of Josh Murphy for Portsmouth but insists there is still more to come from the 29-year-old.

Pompey’s 3-0 victory against Bristol City on Saturday provided a crucial three points, with Murphy playing a huge role alongside Colby Bishop with two goal contributions.

Murphy matched those contributions in the game, taking his total contribution tally up to eight for the season, impressing on a regular basis with Goodman telling Pompey News he has not yet reached his ceiling.

“There’s definitely more to come from him,” Goodman said. “He was a star man in the second half of the season at Oxford and put in an incredible performance at Wembley in the League One playoff final. I saw that and Oxford were devastated that they couldn’t keep him.

“He’s settled in now and he had a little injury in the early part of the season so again I think Portsmouth fans are only going to see him get better and better, and he’s going to be a real asset in their fight to stave off relegation.”

Josh Murphy will be key to Portsmouth survival hopes

When taking into account how much Pompey have struggled offensively this season, for Murphy to have eight goal contributions in 13 games is remarkable.

The return of Bishop will only aid their survival hopes after the striker required heart surgery in the summer, but he has also hit the ground running since coming back.

Keeping him fit and firing will prove to be the catalyst behind the remainder of their season and if they can achieve that, there is no doubting the credentials they have to stay in the Championship.

January will provide a real opportunity to strengthen but his position in the team is one of great strength.

In other Portsmouth news, Ian Darke has urged Pompey to strengthen in January.
