Portsmouth hit by ‘financial headache’ as Expert reacts to postponements

Portsmouth will have to manage their cash flow accordingly after recent postponements, according to finance expert Dan Plumley.

Pompey suffered a double hit in late November as successive fixtures against Blackburn Rovers and Millwall were called off on the day of the game, for a waterlogged pitch and floodlight failure respectively.

Both matches were set to be broadcast on Sky Sports through the bumper EFL deal, while Plumley also pointed out the added logistical costs now enforced on the Blues for the rearranged matches in January.

Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, the football finance expert said: “It will hit them in the pocket. You have to consider the fixtures would have been televised with the new deal as well. The individual fee per match can be around £100,000 tops in the Championship. It’s not huge but it’s significant.

“Obviously when those games are played on TV and are rearranged you will see that fee, so that’s a cashflow thing that you might have to manage. It depends on how the fees are paid out.

“The other side of that is if you have to offer free coach travel and factors that weren’t initially budgeted for, it will run some costs up which can hit them. It’s not huge, but again, you’d rather not have to. Unforeseen circumstances like that can cause a bit of a financial headache.”

Portsmouth rearrange Blackburn and Millwall fixtures

Portsmouth have played the fewest games in the Championship so far this season, with their 18th matchday coming against Norwich City at Fratton Park on Tuesday [10 December].

Many competitors are preparing for their 20th league match in midweek, as Pompey announced January rearrangements for the two postponed contests.
