Finance Expert does not expect Portsmouth to spend significantly in January
Dan Plumley does not expect Portsmouth to spend significantly in the January transfer window as they look to stay up in the Championship.
The football finance expert made the prediction following Andy Cullen’s admission that Pompey are debt-free at Fratton Park, with the club being built back up.
John Mousinho was delighted after the 4-1 win against Coventry on 21 December, which sent his side back up to 20th, two points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand.
Plumley shared if being debt-free could see more money spent in January to try and preserve the Championship status of the club.
“It could,” he exclusively told Pompey News.
“I think it would depend on their appetite for risk.
“Staying in the Championship for them would be huge, the revenue increase for being in the Championship versus League One is circa £7-10million, they’ve already got that this season.
“It would be huge if they could stay in the league and you get that again next season, so it becomes a case of how much are you prepared to roll the dice for that sort of financial gain?
Portsmouth to invest in January transfer window?
“I wouldn’t expect them to spend significantly given the way the club has been built back up in recent years, but there will be that short-term pressure thereof maybe they can stay in the league.
“If you have got no debt, then there are ways you can look to move that so you can invest.”

Ian Darke recently urged the Blues to bring in a couple of “hardened” Championship players to help the survival bid, with younger targets usually looked at.
It will be interesting to see what happens when it all kicks off in less than two weeks.
In other Portsmouth news, Pompey deleted a post on X at the weekend that appeared to mock Coventry boss Frank Lampard.
