Portsmouth feature Under-15s in youth squad beaten by Plymouth
Portsmouth gave several of their Under-15 squad a chance in the Youth Alliance League on Saturday, falling to a 2-0 defeat by Plymouth Argyle.
Harry Clout and Michael Ani, two of Sam Hudson’s most developed youth starlets, were called up for first-team duty by John Mousinho against Coventry City, opening the door for younger players as explained on the Blues’ official website [22 December].
Pompey had beaten Argyle 1-0 at Copnor Road a fortnight prior in the Youth Alliance Cup, but the U18 league fixture with a younger line-up presented one challenge too many in Devon on the day [21 December].

Hudson voiced his disappointment with the result, but only due to how even the clash had become with his pool of teenage talents.
“We matched Plymouth with our duelling and were competitive, especially with how young the side was,” the lead development coach reflected.
“We can feel a little bit hard done by to end with a 2-0 loss, but it was one of those days when a couple of moments decided the outcome and unfortunately, they fell Plymouth’s way.
“I was pleased that the younger players – Dimani Kearney, Lucas Blake and Billy Gilhooly – all gave a good account of themselves on their debut for the Under-18s.”
With the academy setup at Fratton Park often questioned – there is currently no U21 side in place and all second-year scholars were released last summer – the step up from Hudson’s schoolboys who filled the gaps provides plenty of encouragement.
Pompey’s U18s next take on Cheltenham Town in league action on 11 January to kick off 2025, following a progressive calendar year on the pitch.
