Elias Sorensen exit: Portsmouth striker likely to leave in loan deal

Portsmouth are likely to sanction a loan exit for Elias Sorensen in the January transfer window, according to the Football League Paper.

On page 22 of Sunday’s edition [29 December], it was reported Pompey will allow the striker to leave on a temporary deal for more minutes on the pitch.

Colby Bishop’s return has decreased the need for Sorensen, whose impressive goalscoring record in Denmark’s third division tempted the Blues into a successful bid back in August.

Portsmouth set to allow Elias Sorensen out on loan

Portsmouth will undoubtedly be busy in the market with both incomings and outgoings in January, and Sorensen’s anticipated loan will come as a surprise to few.

The Dane, for all his positivity and professionalism, has failed to flourish in the Championship and has not been able to force a regular way into the team, neither up top nor out wide.

Sorensen will always be able to boast the acclaim of scoring Pompey’s first second-tier league goal since 2012, when his powerful finish equalised against Leeds United in the 3-3 thriller at Elland Road [10 August].

However, since his missed penalty against Oxford United on 5 October, things have gone downhill and he has barely had a sniff. His defensive contribution is too minimal for a team who spend so long out of possession and he is not proven to score regularly in the English game.

In fairness, John Mousinho’s strongly favoured 4-2-3-1 shape means there will always be a lack of opportunities as a number nine, and the trust in Matt Ritchie and Josh Murphy means he will seldom receive any game time on the wings.

Whereabouts he heads on loan is an interesting one. He may at this stage be more suited to a European loan, though mainstay experience in English football would likely benefit him if he is to seriously chase a career at Fratton Park.
