Portsmouth told to copy Blackburn transfer blueprint
Don Goodman has urged Portsmouth to be creative in the January transfer window if they are to strengthen their hopes of avoiding relegation.
Pompey look set to be involved in a relegation battle this season but significant investment looks unlikely in January and business will need to be smart.
Joe Gelhardt is one of the names to have been linked with a move to Portsmouth in January (Yorkshire Evening Post) with Goodman explaining to Pompey News that they will have to be creative with the finances available.
“You are slightly hamstrung if you’ve got less money to spend than the rest of the people you’re trying to compete against,” explained Goodman. “But it can be done.
“Ultimately it comes down to being creative with the money that you have. Blackburn are a great example.
“That’s a club with not a lot of money. And I look at Blackburn, I see them in fifth and I see them lose key players. I see them bring in Yuki Ohashi and Makhtar Gueye for not a lot of money. These players were on nobody’s radar or probably not. And Blackburn found them and they have contributed really, really well to their success.
“So that’s a great example of a football club that hasn’t got a lot of money and is probably shopping in the same area as Portsmouth but came up trumps with a couple of players who have really helped their cause. So it can be done. I’m not saying it’s easy. I’m just saying it can be done.”
Creativity could be key to a good window for Portsmouth
Especially in January, player prices are massively inflated with clubs reluctant to lose their players mid-way through a season and Portsmouth will have to be smart with their business.
Ultimately, creative signings often bring the most success in the Championship and can set a club up for years to come not only on the pitch but also financially.

Whichever route Pompey go down, it is crucial that they find a way to strengthen their squad if they are to have any serious ambition of staying in the Championship.
January can often be the make or break for a season and it’s highly unlikely to be any different for Portsmouth in the coming weeks.
