Portsmouth on verge of signing Bristol City ace

Portsmouth are close to signing Rob Atkinson on loan from fellow Championship side Bristol City, according to Andrew Moon.

The BBC South TV reporter posted via his personal X account on Friday (3 January) that Pompey want Atkinson for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

Atkinson has yet to appear for Bristol City this season, with his appearances restricted to the Premier League Cup.

Portsmouth aim to strengthen defence in January transfer window

While supporters will hardly be shouting about this transfer development from the rooftops – Atkinson cannot get into the Bristol City team, after all – it is still a positive development.

The south coast club are looking to bring in new recruits early in the window and are clearly aiming to strengthen at the back.

As reminder, John Mousinho’s men have shipped 40 goals in 23 Championship outings this season, which is the third-worse return in the division behind only Luton Town (42) and Plymouth Argyle (53).

Mousinho could do with more than one recruit, in truth, but this is a start. The hope now is that Bristol City see the need to send Atkinson out on loan for the next four months.

Atkinson is 26 years old but has yet to really find a home for himself, but some regular first-team football at Fratton Park could get the best out of him.

It appears a deal is on the verge of being completed, so it might just be a matter of time before we see the Chesterfield-born player in a Pompey top.
