Portsmouth make Sammy Silvera decision in Middlesbrough transfer update

Portsmouth are set to send winger Sammy Silvera back to parent club Middlesbrough, according to Darren Witcoop.

The journalist, who specialises in transfer news, shared via his personal X account on Tuesday (7 January) that Silvera will return to Boro.

Silvera has made 10 Championship appearances for Pompey this season, six of those as a substitute, and had been due to stay at Fratton Park until the summer.

Sammy Silvera fails to make Portsmouth impact

John Mousinho publicly called out Silvera earlier in the season over his wastefulness and challenged him to step up.

That was in October, at which point he had made seven appearances. Only three more would follow, the most recent of which being against Bristol City on 29 December.

Silvera was supposed to be a difference-maker of sorts at Fratton Park this season, but instead he has been a back-up option at best.

The decision to send him back to Boro was no doubt long thought-out, and it means Pompey are now in need of a replacement.

There has already been some January transfer activity by the South Coast club and supporters know that a couple more additions are required.

It is not hyperbolic to suggest that these next three weeks or so could make or break Portsmouth’s entire campaign.

This is a case of one step back, with a player departing, but Mousinho will be hopeful that more newbies will soon arrive.

It is then over to Mousinho to keep his side above the dotted line in order to ensure this first season back in the second tier is not a one-off.

In other Portsmouth news, Mousinho has scooped an award for what he did last month.
