Portsmouth earn big advantage out of Sorensen sale as targets pursued

Portsmouth bid a quick farewell to Elias Sorensen earlier this week, after the striker secured a permanent exit to Valerenga.

Only signed in the summer from Danish minnows Esbjerg, Sorensen was a risk but having scored just one goal – a momentous equaliser at Leeds United on the Championship’s opening weekend (10 August) – he now moves on with a switch to Norway (Portsmouth FC, 9 January).

Sorensen was never realistically going to earn solid game time at Fratton Park and struggled when he was offered opportunities, with John Mousinho now presented with a huge advantage for January as he sees a coveted squad place open up.

Portsmouth sell Elias Sorensen for roughly the same fee

Sorensen was signed for a fee of around £300,000 back in the summer transfer window, and was thrown in from the start against Leeds due to the unavailability of both Colby Bishop and Kusini Yengi.

These days, even with the Dane adept on the wings, there became no route for him into Mousinho’s system and despite having already played for two clubs this season, he can join Valerenga due to the fact the Norwegian season is played throughout the summer.

For this reason and a subsequent narrowed market to sell the player, Pompey have done well. They recoup around the same £300,000 as was spent on Sorensen, who was a likeable character around Copnor Road but needs game time and the Blues need the squad space for new recruits. He was expected to move on loan if anything, but a sale has presented itself.

The 25-year-old did make 12 appearances in a Portsmouth shirt, though just four of these were from the start as Mousinho found him not to be as reliable as several of his teammates at this level.

It was a gamble that didn’t quite pay off, but the Blues are vindicated through their ability to quickly sell the striker and he is wished a fond farewell and best of luck from the South Coast.
