Mousinho gives Portsmouth transfer update before West Brom trip

John Mousinho says Portsmouth are “pretty close” to adding a couple of further signings, but it is unlikely any business will be complete before the weekend.

Pompey have enjoyed successive home wins but must now look to rectify their away form, taking on West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns this Saturday (25 January).

The Blues have made three signings so far and are very much still in the market, as Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent’s Andy Moon on Thursday (23 January).

“We’re pretty pleased with the window. We’ve brought in two players we thought would affect us and they have – they’re playing well,” the head coach said.

“Tommy [Waddingham] is slightly different – we do think he can make an impact now, but we’re not necessarily bringing him in as a front-liner.

“We’re looking to impact the first team with our business now, but I don’t think there’ll be anything before the West Brom game. We’re pretty close on a couple, so hopefully they’ll go as planned.”

Portsmouth must continue to strengthen

What Portsmouth fans primarily wanted from the winter window was to acquire players at Fratton Park who know the Championship and can help the less experienced players navigate it.

Isaac Hayden and Rob Atkinson, both in on loan until the end of the campaign, can certainly provide that – it’s now about adding to that experienced selection pool while also taking care of the future, with teenager Thomas Waddingham having completed his move from Brisbane Roar.

Pompey are one of the league’s form teams at home, having won five from six at Fratton Park – but the away form has been a real issue, without a point on the road since 30 November at Swansea City.

West Brom under the new helm of Tony Mowbray will provide a very tough test, with the Baggies aiming to secure another crack at the play-off places come the season’s end.

Two more home games come after the trip to the West Midlands, with Millwall and Burnley visiting the South Coast within the subsequent seven days.
