Nicolas Schmid ‘lets Portsmouth down’ after heavy defeat v West Brom

Nicolas Schmid will be hanging his head in shame as Portsmouth lost to West Brom in the Championship on Saturday.

Pompey travelled to The Hawthorns on 25 January and conceded five goals in a 5-1 loss.

Tony Mowbray’s team embarrassed the Hampshire club, with the goalkeeper saving arguably his worst performance for the day.

The Championship table doesn’t read well for John Mousinho’s team, and his future could well be up in the air if he doesn’t improve on this hammering quickly.

Nicolas Schmid errors drown Portsmouth in West Brom loss

Schmid made two errors in the game against The Albion, with a goals-prevented rating of -1.99, as per FotMob.

The Austrian shot-stopper struggled with the ball at his feet as well, with just 58 per cent passing accuracy and 39 per cent of his long balls accurate — putting his team under pressure on multiple occasions.

Throughout the 90 minutes, he had 54 touches of the ball and conceded five goals as Portsmouth left The Hawthorns red-faced and embarrassed.

While the defending wasn’t up to par either, Schmid didn’t help the cause with his silly mistakes.

A goal each from Alex Mowatt, Jed Wallace and John Swift, and Grady Diangana’s brace gave Pompey more than they could chew.

Thomas Waddingham scored a consolation goal in stoppage time, his first since signing and only positive on the day – having three shots on goal in 33 minutes.

Scmid let his manager and teammates down, and while it’s unlikely that the goalkeeper will lose his place in between the sticks, Mousinho will have a big decision to make regarding his defence against Millwall on Tuesday (28 January).
