Merson wowed by one ‘stand-out’ Portsmouth star despite loss v Millwall
Paul Merson was blown away by the performance of Josh Murphy as Portsmouth fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Millwall on Tuesday night.
Murphy has been a star performer for Pompey all season and his quality was on show again against the Lions at Fratton Park.
Having played an excellent ball into the area in the second half, Murphy was unfortunate not to get an assist with Merson stunned by the quality on show from the winger, who was unlucky to be on the losing side of the game.
Speaking on Sky Sports News [28 January, 9:09pm], Merson said: “Great bit of play by Murphy, whips it in with his left foot. [Matt] Ritchie comes in, has to hit the target and he probably scores.
Murphy has probably been the standout player for Portsmouth. Some really good wing play, he’s had some good crosses and there’s another one.”

Murphy has been on fire for Pompey ever since making the move from Oxford United and he holds a huge amount of importance in their bid to avoid the drop this season.
Having already entered double figures for goals and assists in the Championship, his quality has been on full display throughout the majority of encounters for Pompey and as long as that continues, they have a great chance of remaining in the second division.
Of course, if Pompey can inject some additional quality into the squad in the coming days, that may allow Murphy to thrive even more with perhaps less responsibility on his shoulders to deliver the big moments.
Despite being on the losing side against Millwall, Murphy can take plenty of pleasure from his own performance in which he was perhaps unfortunate not to come away with a contribution.
A home encounter with Burnley is up next for Pompey and Murphy will undoubtedly have a key role to play in that clash.
