Portsmouth transfers: Don Goodman reacts to Sky Sports update – ‘Enormous’
Don Goodman is unconvinced by the links connecting Portsmouth with a move for Celtic forward Daniel Cummings.
Having already completed plenty of winter transfer business, Portsmouth are said to have set their sights on Celtic’s young striker Cummings [Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph].
The forward has scored an impressive 24 goals in 24 games at youth level but when speaking exclusively to Pompey News, Goodman seemed unphased by the potential signing.
“The step from youth team football to men’s senior football is just enormous,” explained Goodman. “So there are no guarantees.
“There are thousands of lads that have done well at youth team level that couldn’t make that step up. So Portsmouth will have done their due diligence and they wouldn’t be in for him if they didn’t feel that it was a step that he could take.
“I like the idea that they’re looking at young players and trying to bring out the best in them, fulfil the potential and all of those things. Are these players for the here and now? Well, they really shouldn’t be, but if they can add value for the future, then who knows?”
Cummings signing would be a huge risk for Portsmouth
Given the situation Pompey find themselves in and their fight to avoid the drop, questions will be asked as to whether signing a player with no senior experience is the answer.
Of course, no one can fully predict how transfers can go and should Pompey sign Cummings, he could hit the ground running and it could be lauded as the signing that saves them from relegation.
However, with that in mind, the focus needs to be on signing players who can come in and have an immediate impact having showcased their ability to do that elsewhere.

As for now, Cummings doesn’t quite fit that bill, as impressive as his goal record is for the youth side at Celtic.
Pompey may still be active in the remainder of the transfer window with the 3 February deadline rapidly approaching.
