Don Goodman shares main Portsmouth concern in relegation verdict – ‘Massive’

Don Goodman believes the away form of Portsmouth is their main concern as they look to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Despite their 1-0 defeat to Millwall on 28 January, Pompey have demonstrated a strong run of form at Fratton Park but the same cannot be said away from it.

Their last win away from home was a 2-1 victory against QPR in October, with that area of their game highlighted as the main area of improvement needed.

Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, Goodman shares what he has noticed from John Mousinho and his squad this season.

“I’ve seen a massive contrast between home and away,” he said.

“They’ve lost just once at home since the back end of October. So at home, they’ve got it going and they now are a fully-fledged, very good Championship team.

“Away from home, they’ve lost 5-1, 3-0, 1-0, 3-0, 2-1, 4-0. These are their last six losses in a row. The contrast is massive and it really does put pressure on your home form.

“You’re not going to keep winning every single home game and therefore there’s got to come a point where you start picking up points away from home.”

Portsmouth need to drastically improve their away form

Despite 15 attempts, Pompey have won just once on their travels, accumulating just seven points from a possible 45 and that needs to improve if they are to avoid the drop.

Only Luton and Plymouth have showcased a worse away form than John Mousinho’s side and like Goodman alluded to, unless you can win every home game, it is a major concern.

Fixtures don’t get any easier for Pompey either, with Burnley next to Fratton Park before an away trip to Sheffield United and Bramall Lane.

However, Portsmouth have some crucial matches after that with Oxford, Luton and Cardiff to play in a short space of time and the results achieved in those games could provide a telling factor in their chances of survival.
