Sky Sports pundit wowed by what Bishop did in Portsmouth first half v Cardiff

Colby Bishop has been praised by Courtney Sweetman-Kirk after his goal for Portsmouth against Cardiff City.

Bishop netted his fifth goal of the season, poking a neat finish past Jak Alnwick having been set up by former Bluebirds man Josh Murphy.

The Pompey number nine scored in the ninth minute to get Pompey off to the best possible start, before Conor Shaughnessy’s header doubled the lead.

Callum O’Dowda nodded Cardiff back into proceedings on the South Coast as the two survival rivals do battle.

Portsmouth see Bishop at his best

Bishop has been decent since his emotional return back in November, playing Championship football just 12 weeks after summer heart surgery.

He scored a penalty against Preston minutes into his first game back, and has since added another four, very unlucky against Sheffield United last Saturday (8 January) via a goal chalked off for offside.

Sweetman-Kirk, live on Sky Sports (11 February, 19:51) lauded Bishop for his impact and the build-up down the left flank from Connor Ogilvie to Murphy.

“We mentioned Bishop and how hard he works, how much he’s enjoying being back playing football. Ogilvie starts it, plays it to Murphy, and this is a really good finish,” she said.

“He takes it on his back foot and makes sure he’s shielding the ball, and it’s so difficult, this little piece of skill to find the back of the net with the outside of his boot.

“The little nutmeg tops it off as well – that’s a really accomplished finish.”

Mousinho’s men can climb above opponents with win

Should Portsmouth overcome Cardiff at Fratton Park, they will clamber above Omer Riza’s visitors in the Championship table.

The second tier is reverting to type as an incredibly tight division in which consistency is absolutely key, and Pompey’s home form has – by and large – kept them afloat.

The away form desperately needs improving, despite the fact that Saturday’s performance at Sheffield United was worthy of winning the game, let alone hanging on for a point.

The Blues head to fellow promoted side Oxford United on Saturday (15 February) in a bid to secure just a second away win this season, but first must get the job done against the Bluebirds.
