Portsmouth relegation chances shift overnight in new supercomputer update

Portsmouth are fighting against the threat of relegation from the Championship this season and their chances of survival have now been updated.

John Mousinho’s side have lost 16 of their 35 league games this term, although a recent upturn appeared to make relegation fears a thing of the past.

As things stand, Pompey sit 17th in the table, eight points above the relegation zone with 11 game to play.

Portsmouth relegation chances predicted

Mousinho’s side have won three of their last five games, meaning they have been able to pull away slightly from the relegation pack.

This was reflected when it came to Portsmouth’s chances of survival after last weekend’s results, as it was predicted they would have a minor 2.76 per cent of relegation.

After 19th placed Hull City gained a 2-0 victory over 23rd Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday (4 March), the Opta Supercomputer has changed the predicted chances slightly, with the result working in Pompey’s favour.

The South Coast side are now predicted to have a 2.38 per cent chance of relegation, with their chances or survival increasing ever so slightly as Plymouth look more doomed.

Mousinho’s side are predicted to finish the season with 53 points, placing them 17th in the table.

Portsmouth ready to fight against relegation

It may have taken some time to get going this season but Pompey look like they might be getting on track now and be able to avoid relegation, even accounting for the Luton loss.

Their recent results have dragged them up the table and Mousinho’s side now have a healthy gap between themselves and the drop zone, which does give a bit of breathing space.

The Championship table from Portsmouth to Luton Town, in the relegation zone.

Although Hull winning means there’s just three points between those two sides, it’s likely that Plymouth’s defeat will play a big part in securing their relegation, hence why it has helped Pompey’s chances of survival.

A 1-0 defeat against fellow relegation side Luton Town at the weekend was not an ideal result for Portsmouth, especially ahead of the game against Leeds United at Fratton Park.

Following that game, Pompey then prepare to face Plymouth themselves, which could be a massive game in the race to stay in the second tier.
