Callum Lang sends message to Colby Bishop after Portsmouth win v Leeds

Portsmouth took a giant step towards securing their Championship status with a 1-0 win against Leeds United on Sunday.

Thanks to their hard-fought victory over Leeds, Pompey are now 10 points clear of the Championship relegation zone with 10 games left to play.

Portsmouth enjoyed back-to-back wins over Cardiff, Oxford and QPR but supporters may have been worried about their survival prospects following their 1-0 loss to relegation threatened Luton on 1 March.

However, Pompey have put those doubts to bed with the victory over Leeds, which may be spoken about by the Fratton Park faithful during the years to come.

Pompey’s encounter with Leeds was not without its controversy, as Matt Ritchie appeared to bring down Dan James at 0-0, but the Whites were not awarded a spot-kick.

The Whites were also wasteful with their opportunities, while Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid put on a top drawer performance to maintain his sixth clean sheet of the season.

It was Colby Bishop who showed everyone how it’s done though, clipping over an onrushing Illan Meslier to send Fratton Park wild in the second half.

Bishop was clearly delighted with the victory and posted on Instagram: “Fortress.”

Fellow Portsmouth star Callum Lang, who missed out on the action through injury, commented: “I really enjoyed that thanks.”

Meanwhile, Marlon Pack who put in a solid defensive display said: “Uppers tomorrow.”

Portsmouth have a major opportunity to continue strong Fratton Park form

Pompey’s win over Leeds marked their third consecutive win at Fratton Park, while they have not lost on home soil since a 1-0 defeat to Millwall on 28 January.

Portsmouth boast the ninth best home record in the Championship, having won 32 points in Hampshire this term, which has made up for their poor away form, keeping them out of relegation trouble in recent weeks.

Mousinho’s men will likely be plying their trade in the second-tier once more next term, and will be hoping to put solid foundations in place in preparation for that.

Meanwhile, Pompey have a major opportunity to further strengthen their home record on Wednesday when they host Plymouth, who sit bottom of the Championship table and are still yet to win a league game on away soil this term.

Portsmouth’s victory over Leeds shows that Mousinho and co should be able to claim all three points once more in another huge step to survival.
