Portsmouth v Plymouth preview: Team news, lineups, head to head, betting odds

Portsmouth host Plymouth Argyle at Fratton Park on Wednesday evening aiming to continue their good form.

After their emphatic win over league leaders Leeds United, Plymouth are next up at Fratton Park on 12 March.

John Mousinho’s side shocked the Championship on Sunday as they ended Leeds’ 17-game unbeaten streak and clinched three valuable points at home.

With the win, Pompey are 10 points clear of the drop zone as they now welcome relegation-threatened Plymouth.

Mousinho’s team will look to make it five wins of the last six, whereas Plymouth will be looking for their first win in six games.

Portsmouth vs Plymouth preview

Pompey have all the momentum they need following their triumph over Leeds United. Their players are far more confident than relegation-threatened Plymouth’s players, who are unable to catch a break at this point in the season.

Portsmouth have had a tremendous resurgence in the Championship after initially struggling and falling in the drop zone. Their four wins in last five matches have pulled them out of the trouble and placed them in a far more comfortable position.

The same cannot be said for the Pilgrims as they have been in the relegation zone since matchday 20. After 36 games, Miron Muslic’s side are six points away from safety.

Portsmouth team news vs Plymouth

Pompey will be without Conor Shaughnessy, who picked up a hamstring injury and last featured in early February.

The hosts will also be without winger Paddy Lane, but the 24-year-old is nearing a return. Right-back Jordan Williams is also sidelined because of a muscle injury he picked against West Brom in January.

Jacob Farrell is also out of contention and is due to return to the team in May. Callum Lang, Hayden Matthews and Ibane Bowat remain long-term absentees as they are out for the rest of the season.

Portsmouth vs Plymouth head to head

In the Championship, as it is known now, these sides have faced each other just once. That came earlier this season, when the Pilgrims won 1-0 against Pompey at Home Park.

The recent history has been in favour of Plymouth as they have are undefeated in their last eight clashes against Pompey. Plymouth have won three times and drawn five times in those eight games.

Portsmouth’s last win against Plymouth came back in 2018 when they defeated the Pilgrims 3-0 in a League One clash. While the history favours Plymouth, current form and momentum is heavily in favour of the hosts.

Prediction: Portsmouth 2-0 Plymouth

Although recent history sides with Plymouth, their poor form coupled with Portsmouth’s impressive run make it almost impossible for the visitors to squeeze anything positive out of the game.

Mousinho’s side are riding the confidence wave after their win over Daniel Farke’s Leeds and are favourites to win at Fratton Park on Wednesday.

Colby Bishop is in decent form and will look to add to his goal tally when he faces the league’s worst defence.
