EFL make official announcement after Portsmouth win v Leeds

Portsmouth secured a huge three points against the league leaders at Elland Road.

John Mousinho’s side returned to winning ways on Sunday (9 March) with a well-earned 1-0 victory at home to Leeds United.

Colby Bishop was the goalscorer for Pompey, continuing his impressive form since returning from the treatment room earlier in the campaign.

The win against Leeds wasn’t without controversy, though Portsmouth were deserved winners at the end of the game and have been mentioned in the latest EFL reveal.

Portsmouth duo make Championship TOTW

Portsmouth were at their best against the Whites, and several players who stepped up to the occasion have been rewarded for their efforts with a place in the Championship Team of the Week.

Zak Swanson, who has been a regular for Portsmouth, thrived once again against the promotion hopefuls, while Nicolas Schmid did his job to prevent Leeds from finding a route past him.

Both have been named in the latest TOTW, showcasing just how impressive their performance was at Fratton Park.

Having once looked as though they were favourites to go down, Portsmouth have improved massively as the season has gone on, and safety is just a couple of small steps away.

10 points separate Mousinho’s side from the bottom three, which in all likelihood will already be enough to secure their status in the Championship beyond the current campaign.

Portsmouth must make the most of Championship freedom

While things can change, it certainly looks as though Pompey are all but safe in the Championship this season, which will allow them to play without that pressure.

It is circumstances like that which often bring out the best of players and could suit the likes of Adil Aouchiche, who has likely been hindered by it.

Nevertheless, Portsmouth must maintain focus on the task at hand and ensure that they have a strong finish to the season.
