Terry Devlin to emulate Northern Ireland hero after Portsmouth performances

Terry Devlin will be hoping to make a splash for Northern Ireland after his form at Portsmouth resulted in an international call-up.

Devlin is yet to make his international debut for the Green and White Army despite a previous call-up in November 2023, but his form this term amid a Portsmouth revival means a maiden appearance beckons.

The 21-year-old hasn’t quite been a regular fixture for Portsmouth this season – few have given the extent of injuries John Mousinho has had to contend with – but he’s always done a job when called upon.

Operating both in central and attacking midfield this term as well as on either flank of Pompey’s defence, Devlin’s performances across any and every position have helped Mousinho’s side climb clear of danger.

Terry Devlin brings unique attributes to Northern Ireland

Devlin’s versatility has been a valuable asset for Portsmouth this season amid a spate of constant injuries across defence and midfield, despite more prominent players being singled out for credit at Fratton Park.

Pompey edged themselves 10 points clear of the Championship relegation zone with a 1-0 win over leaders Leeds United on Sunday, as Devlin came off the bench to be one of their standout performers.

After being named in Northern Ireland’s squad for their matches with Switzerland and Sweden, Devlin has a chance not only to make his debut against the Swiss, but also to be their own Swiss army knife.

Stuart Dallas

Clubs and international managers in particular are often fond of utility players willing to try their hand at any position; Northern Ireland having had one of their own for many years, in the form of Stuart Dallas.

Dallas’ retirement in 2024 following a broken femur while playing for Leeds two years earlier has left Michael O’Neill without a player who can cover most positions across the midfield and defence.

Devlin, having done just that for Portsmouth this term, therefore has the opportunity to stake a lasting place in O’Neill’s side thanks to his own versatility – which was on full display against Dallas’ former side.

Both Devlin and Dallas hailing from Cookstown won’t be lost on the Pompey utility either, and having been given the chance to stake his claim, expect one of Mousinho’s favourites to make his mark.
