Portsmouth news: Nico Schmid lauded by John Mousinho

John Mousinho has been really impressed with Nico Schmid since he’s moved to Portsmouth.

Pompey secured the Austrian goalkeeper’s services on a two-year deal in August 2024.

Since then, he has been a regular in the Championship for Mousinho’s side.

Leeds United clash showed Nico Schmid’s importance for Portsmouth

Schmid’s heroics were on display in the recent 1-0 win over Leeds United and they earned praises from Mousinho.

He said, per The News: “Nico has been a huge part of where we’ve managed to get to in the league this year.

“Sunday was a big example of that, where he was required to make some big saves – that’s why we brought him in.

“We took a bit of time to make sure we were comfortable bringing him into the football club. At the moment we feel like it was the right decision.

“Nico was a really, really sensible bit of business for us.

“He was not expensive at all, relatively, and we’re extremely pleased with what we got him for. I think, off the top of my head it was low six figures so we’re very happy with that.

“That level of goalkeeper isn’t going to be available in England for that sort of fee.”

At 28, the 6ft 5in goalkeeper brings a blend of experience and peak physicality, underpinned by a level-headedness that has stabilised the backline.

Pompey must continue impressive transfer scouting behind the scenes

Pompey’s acquisition of the Austrian exemplifies the shrewd, behind-the-scenes work that can propel a club toward success, even with limited resources.

Mousinho’s praise for the “really sensible” signing highlights a strategic approach to recruitment that prioritises value, potential, and fit over splashy, high-cost moves.

Schmid, secured from BW Linz for a six-figure fee, has emerged as a cornerstone of Pompey’s Championship campaign, delivering 29 appearances and standout performances.

This move reflects meticulous scouting and patience, as Mousinho noted the club took time to ensure Schmid was the right addition for Portsmouth.

The two-year deal with an option for a third year further demonstrates calculated risk management, securing a bargain asset with room to grow in value.

For a club like Portsmouth, historically constrained by finances, such astute business is a blueprint for sustainability and competitiveness.

If they aspire to return to the Premier League, a division they last graced in 2010, replicating these calls will be essential.

The top flight demands not just talent but cost-effective depth to survive its rigours and Schmid’s case shows how Pompey can unearth gems without breaking the bank.

To reclaim Premier League status, Pompey must institutionalise this approach, identifying overlooked talent, negotiating favourable terms and trusting in their development pipeline.

Schmid’s success is a testament to what’s possible when the backroom gets it right, setting a standard for future moves.
