Portsmouth player ratings v Preston – Connor Ogilvie flops as 7/10 only shining light

Portsmouth were handed their 18th loss of the Championship season after a 2-1 defeat against Preston on Saturday.

After a goalless and uneventful first half, Ryan Porteous opened the scoring in the 76th minute, although Colby Bishop equalised minutes later at Deepdale.

However, John Mousinho’s side crashed behind again, as Stefan Thordarson netted the winner in the 87th minute, leaving Pompey just four points above the drop zone.

Portsmouth player ratings v Preston

Nicolas Schmid – 4

Had very little to do in the first half, but after the break, he could have done better with Porteous’ goal. Schmid’s effort to keep out the winning strike was poor, as he did not commit fully to stopping the Iceland international.

Terry Devlin – 5

Devlin was heavily involved in the opening 45 minutes, making the most touches for Pompey. He was poor in the second, though, as Mousinho’s side conceded two goals, which eventually lost them the game.

Regan Poole – 4

Poole should have done better in tracking Emil Riis Jakobsen. He was nowhere to be seen in tracking back Thordarson as the North End player went on to score the winner.

Cohen Bramall – 5

The defender came agonisingly close to scoring as he collected the ball in his own half and drove forward before launching a long-range strike which hit the woodwork. His defending let him down, though.

Connor Ogilvie – 4

Ogilvie should have done a better job in stopping the North End from scoring the second goal, not being able to stop that vital run after making all the headlines against Leeds last week.

Freddie Potts – 5

Potts was inches away from getting a touch on the ball and scoring as Josh Murphy swung in a low-cross in the first half. The 21-year-old had a decent game as he looked in control in the middle but when Preston turned up the tempo, the midfielder did not have an answer.

Andre Dozzell – 5

Dozzell curled a shot in the 45th minute, worrying Freddie Woodman for a second but the shot was going wide as the scoreline remained 0-0. The midfielder had a poor second half as he couldn’t help Portsmouth soak the pressure and launch attacks.

The Portsmouth attack did a decent job

Josh Murphy – 6

Murphy looked electric in the first half as he consistently got into dangerous positions. The 30-year-old also managed to get an assist for Bishop’s goal in the second half, giving Pompey half a chance.

Adil Aouchiche – 5

The Sunderland loanee was heavily involved in the first half and shot just wide in the 31st minute. The playmaker was brought off in the second half as Kaide Gordon searched to make a difference.

Kusini Yengi – 5

Yengi was rather anonymous in the 68 minutes he played as Pompey struggled to create chances in front of the goal. He was brought off Mark O’Mahony and will head off to international duty in Australia with little reason to have been selected.

Colby Bishop – 7

The striker was once again the only impactful player for Pompey this afternoon. The Englishman got his seventh goal of the Championship season as he gave the visitors some fighting chance. However, his effort went in vain as Preston went on to score the winner late on, let down by his teammates.
