Callum Lang spotted in heartwarming moment as Portsmouth suffer at Preston

Portsmouth have been left reeling from successive Championship defeats which now leave the Blues just four points above the relegation places.

The gap was a healthy 10 points just four days ago, before Pompey were beaten by Plymouth Argyle at Fratton Park (12 March).

They followed this up with another loss at Preston North End on Saturday (15 March) which has left John Mousinho furious with his Portsmouth team.

Lang appearance a nice moment on a sickening day

While everyone associated with the Blues wishes it was an appearance on the pitch, Callum Lang did the next best thing while his teammates played in his native North West.

As shown by Pompey fan @yssiefricker on X (15 March), Lang joined the band of travelling supporters in the away end at Deepdale to back his side.

The 10-goal top scorer for Portsmouth in 2024-25 has been a huge miss since sustaining a hamstring injury which is likely to rule him out until pre-season.

While it’s excruciating not having Lang out on the pitch to help his teammates during what turned out to be an agonising defeat – yet another on the road – it was a silver lining to see him take to the Deepdale stands alongside the fans who adore him.

Lang, previously of Preston’s neighbourly rivals Wigan Athletic, featured in the reverse fixture between the two sides at Fratton back in November – a 3-1 win which was the first Championship success in PO4 this season.

Portsmouth not out of the woods yet

The fact Portsmouth have gone from 10 points clear of the drop to just four in a matter of days illustrates the utter ruthlessness of the Championship.

Most Pompey fans were still reluctant too become too excited or comfortable following the sensational win over Leeds United last Sunday (9 March), as they feared a dip in form was perfectly feasible.

Portsmouth have to ensure they stay afloat

As it happens, the Blues have gone on to take not a single point from six available since, with the international break now dissecting this month’s league plans.

After the absent international players return to Copnor Road, Portsmouth will prepare to face a Blackburn Rovers side aiming to secure a spot inside the top six.

The likes of Coventry, Norwich and Watford also remain in the run-in, all huge tests for Pompey alongside games against survival rivals Derby and then Hull on the final day.
