Mousinho right to be ‘furious’ after what happened in Preston v Portsmouth
Portsmouth have won just one of their last four Championship encounters following their defeat to Preston.
After the victory against Leeds United, many thought Portsmouth had turned a corner in the Championship.
However, a defeat to Plymouth, closely followed by the recent defeat to Preston has seen some of those concerns resurface at Fratton Park.
With that said, it wasn’t necessarily the result that left John Mousinho angered, instead, it was something in the game that left the Blues manager furious, and it was certainly warranted.

Portsmouth failed to impress V Preston
Although it appears somewhat unlikely, relegation is still a possibility for Portsmouth if they do not improve.
Consistency has arguably been the main concern for Mousinho’s side, but also the way they have often handed victory to their opponent.
It is exactly that that left Mousinho frustrated, with Andrew Moon claiming that it “was the angriest” he has ever seen him after the defeat.
Preston v Portsmouth | Goals | xG | Shots | Possession |
Preston | 2 | 2.51 | 14 | 54% |
Portsmouth | 1 | 0.58 | 9 | 46% |
As quoted by BBC Sport, Moon said: “Mousinho was particularly angry with the way Preston won the game. In truth, though, this was an average spectacle between two fairly limited teams.”
Quite frankly, Pompey made it far too easy for Paul Heckingbottom’s side, and that will be a real concern and one that Mousinho is more than within his right to be angered about.
Heading into the final eight games of the season, Portsmouth find themselves in 17th, though they are only four points clear of the bottom three, showcasing just how tight it is at the bottom of the Championship.

Mousinho has concerns to address
Portsmouth have impressed in some games while looking completely lost in others, and that is the main issue that Mousinho needs to address if they are to stay clear of the bottom three.
Only a couple more wins would likely secure safety for the Blues, but if a performance like the one against Preston is replicated, they may be harder to come by than many would assume.
With the international break upon us, Portsmouth have plenty of time to work on the training pitch and iron out several aspects of their game that have been holding them back throughout the campaign.
Pompey certainly have more than enough in this squad to ensure that they can secure their status in the championship next season, though whether that comes to fruition is yet to be seen
