Ryley Towler future ‘set in stone’ at Portsmouth after what happened v Preston
Portsmouth are not making their lives easy this season with their 2-1 loss against Preston North End leaving them six points clear of the relegation zone.
Although they have picked up some impressive results of late, John Mousinho’s side are still too inconsistent.
The boss tried to change things up for the trip to Preston but clearly, they did not have the desired effect as his side crashed to defeat again.

Ryley Towler snubbed by Mousinho
Mousinho’s main aim at Fratton Park this term is to keep his side in the Championship, meaning he is not afraid to be brutal and leave players out of the team if he doesn’t feel they can help.
However, Ryler Towler is one man who has found his game time particularly low this term having made just 12 Championship appearances across the campaign.
The left-sided centre-back probably thought he would get an opportunity when injuries left Pompey short of players at the back but Mousinho opted to use Marlon Pack out of position instead.
Connor Ogilvie was the preferred option against Preston and despite the boss admitting that he did not have the best game, it doesn’t seem as though Towler will get his opportunity anytime soon.
What’s more, Alex Milosovic is building up his fitness which will give Mousinho another option to use before having to turn to the 22-year-old who has spent the majority of the season waiting for an opportunity.

Towler surely set for Portsmouth exit
Although Pompey have bigger issues on their minds right now, there will be some decisions to be made in the summer transfer window ahead of the new season.
The South Coast outfit may be unsure about whether they will find themselves in the Championship or League One but regardless, Towler is surely set for a move away from Fratton Park.
Season | Appearances |
2024/25 | 12 |
2023/24 | 6 |
2022/23 | 20 |
Despite contributing a goal this season, Mousinho has made it clear that Towler is not someone he feels he can rely on in the squad, being reluctant to use him.
Even last term, the 22-year-old made just seven appearances in League One despite having played 20 the campaign before that.
With a year left on his contract, it doesn’t seem to be worth anyone’s time for the two parties to sit there watching it tick down and a fresh start is surely the better option.
