Portsmouth’s incredible record remains intact after Newcastle win v Liverpool
Portsmouth are currently battling to retain their Championship status, but suffered a 2-1 defeat at Preston on Saturday.
Pompey seemingly turned a corner when they beat Leeds United 1-0 on Sunday 9 March to pull themselves 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
But they have subsequently endured back-to-back losses at the hands of Plymouth and Preston, and are now just four points clear of trouble during the international break.
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho was left frustrated by the fact that his side found their equaliser against Preston on 83 minutes, only to concede an even later winner.

Portsmouth’s Wembley attendance record remains intact after 2025 Carabao Cup final
Newcastle’s 2-1 triumph over Liverpool in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final was watched at Wembley by 88,513 supporters.
However, the highest attended match at the new Wembley since it opened in 2007 remains the 2008 FA Cup final, which was played out between Portsmouth and Cardiff, and watched on by 89,853 fans.
Pompey emerged victorious on that historic day, defeating Cardiff 1-0 to lift the famous old trophy thanks to Nwankwo Kanu’s solitary goal.

Portsmouth must get back to winning ways after international break
The feel-good factor Pompey felt when they beat Championship leaders Leeds earlier this month has all but disappeared courtesy of their consecutive defeats to Plymouth and Preston.
Opponent | Result |
Luton (A) | 1-0 L |
Leeds (H) | 1-0 W |
Plymouth (H) | 1-2 L |
Preston (A) | 2-1 L |
Prior to their triumph at Fratton Park on 12 March, Plymouth were yet to win an away game in the second tier this term, which epitomises just how poor Mousinho’s men were that night.
Portsmouth then seemingly did well to get themselves back on level terms in the second half at Deepdale on Saturday, only to throw their point away late on.
Next time out, Pompey host Blackburn on 29 March, and it is vital that they defeat the Lancashire outfit in order to maintain their current four-point cushion over the relegation zone.
Blackburn are still yet to win a game since former boss John Eustace traded Ewood Park in favour of a move to Derby County, so a defeat against Rovers would mark yet another poor day at the office for Mousinho and Co.
