‘Portsmouth have let their fans down more than any Championship club’

Portsmouth supporters once again saw their away form let them down last Saturday at Preston North End.

The late defeat at Deepdale (15 March) has threatened to swirl Pompey back into the survival scrap with just a four-point gap existing between John Mousinho’s men and the bottom three in the Championship.

The Blues had moved 10 points clear just six days prior with an excellent Fratton Park win over Leeds United, but have endured yet another away defeat from a long journey for thousands of ardent fans.

Championship stat shows Portsmouth fans most heavily let down

Portsmouth regularly sell out huge away allocations, despite competing with the likes of Sunderland, Norwich City and Plymouth Argyle when it comes to total distance travelled among all the away fixtures in a season.

As shared by The Lower Tiers on X (19 March), Pompey took the largest away attendance of the weekend’s EFL fixtures, before each club separated for the upcoming international break.

Over 3,600 fans made the trip to Preston to see their side once again beaten on their travels, with a record of just two away league wins this season coming in stark contrast to much of their form at Fratton Park.

Sunderland took just short of 3,000 to see their team comprehensively beaten at Coventry City, while Stockport County of League One came in third for away fans travelled when they were rewarded with a 1-0 win on their short trip to Bolton Wanderers.

Pompey fans are now sick of the sight of away fixtures, and still to come are trips to Millwall, Coventry, Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday.

Mousinho prioritising Pompey home form

Mousinho appears to have decided Portsmouth are making their form at Fratton Park a priority, and it shows.

The head coach opted for alterations against Preston with numerous changes made, having already rotated his side in away games this season.

Of the Blues’ current points total of 42 from 38 games, 32 points have come at Fratton, with just 10 away from home.

As shown by SoccerStats, Portsmouth are 10th in the Championship table for home form, having won nine of their 19 games in PO4 so far.

On strictly away form, Pompey are positioned in the bottom three, with only Luton Town and Plymouth boasting worse records on the road – Argyle ironically claiming their maiden away league victory at Fratton Park last Wednesday (12 March).

Mousinho is under more pressure now to pick up the team’s form and ensure they are not dragged into a complete dogfight during the entire run-in.
