Danny Cowley shares injury update on Portsmouth loanee Anthony Scully

Portsmouth loanee Anthony Scully has had a tough few months of injury struggles but there is now light at the end of the tunnel.

Scully joined League Two side Colchester United on loan in the summer but he has not featured since November after suffering a bad ankle injury.

The 25-year-old has been limited to just nine appearances in all competitions this season but, after a lengthy absence, he now appears close to a return to action.

Colchester manager Danny Cowley has now revealed a positive update on the Pompey loanee and it is exciting news for everyone.

Portsmouth loanee Anthony Scully nearing injury return

Speaking ahead of Colchester United’s clash with Bradford City, Cowley revealed that Scully could return to the matchday squad.

“Anthony has had two full weeks of training now and this week, we’ve started to see the sharpness,” he told the Essex County Daily Gazette Stand (20 March).

“He’s got such a quick mind and when he connects with boys like Lyle (Taylor) who’s also got a quick mind, then good things happen.

“It’s been great to have him back – he’s got real, real quality.

“The games are getting bigger and the bigger they get, the more you need your big players and he’s proven in his career that he’s capable of really good things.

“He’s close – we never make a decision in terms of the squad until we’ve trained on the Friday, so it’s always once we’ve watched training back, before we make those decisions.

“But he’s really started to find his rhythm in training this week and it’s been great to see, because he’s a good kid and our heart is with him.”

Anthony Scully’s injury frustration

Scully began the season featuring off the bench after completing his loan move from Pompey, but just as he was building up his match sharpness, he was struck down with a devastating ankle injury.

The winger previously had metal plating inserted into his ankle, but this had to be surgically removed after an FA Cup clash with Swindon Town in November.

This surgery kept Scully out since, whilst he battled towards recovery, and he is now nearing a return to action.

Colchester will hope Scully can build up his fitness again, and play a part for Cowley’s side before the end of the season, whilst Pompey will be keeping an eye on his progress at the Colchester Community Stadium.

Scully’s contract at Portsmouth expires in the summer, meaning that the next two months will be vital for him to earn a new deal at Fratton Park. If he cannot maintain his fitness, it seems likely that he will depart on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
