John Mousinho will keep a keen eye on Portsmouth loanee after new update

Portsmouth have the weekend off with no fixture scheduled during the International break, but the work never stops for manager John Mousinho.

As Pompey enter the final two months of the season, they will back themselves to survive the relegation battle in the Championship, with Portsmouth four points clear of the drop zone.

Portsmouth’s first campaign in the Championship in 13 years has been a promising one, but there are still Pompey players out on loan in the lower divisions.

Winger Anthony Scully joined League Two side Colchester United at the start of the season, but the 25-year-old has missed most of the season through injury. However, Mousinho will likely be keeping a close eye on him this weekend.

Portsmouth loanee Anthony Scully to return from injury

Colchester manager Danny Cowley recently revealed that Scully could be ready for match action for the first time since November, after a serious ankle injury.

“He’s close – we never make a decision in terms of the squad until we’ve trained on the Friday, so it’s always once we’ve watched training back, before we make those decisions,” Cowley told The Daily Essex County Gazzette News.

“But he’s really started to find his rhythm in training this week and it’s been great to see, because he’s a good kid and our heart is with him.”

Scully has been absent since picking up a brutal ankle injury in November, which required surgery and a lengthy recovery period, but the winger looks set to return, and Mousinho will be keen to keep an eye on his progress.

Anthony Scully fighting for Portsmouth future

Scully will now hope to build up his match fitness and find his form in the final few months of the season. After such a lengthy absence, it will be a challenge for him to break into the Colchester United starting XI.

The winger is out of contract at Portsmouth at the end of the season, and it appears unlikely that he will earn a new deal as it stands.

However, if he can prove his fitness and impress in League Two before the end of the season, then the door may not fully close on the attacker after what has been a challenging season.

The former West Ham youngster was impressive at Lincoln City before his eventual move to Pompey in 2023, but he has managed just nine appearances for Portsmouth in that time.

A strong run of form could give him a lifeline at Fratton Park, and Scully will hope that Mousinho pays attention to his injury return at the Colchester Community Stadium this weekend.
