Regan Poole shares brutal admission about Portsmouth form

Regan Poole returned to action after a long-term injury earlier this season and the Portsmouth defender has shared a brutal admission about his recent form.

John Mousinho’s side will be looking to secure their status as a Championship team over the final eight matches of the season.

Pompey are now just four points above the dropzone after back-to-back defeats against Plymouth and Preston ahead of the March international break. As a result, relegation is a real possibility at Fratton Park.

Therefore, Mousinho will need all of his players at their best between now and May, while the 38-year-old could even be forced to drop some Portsmouth regulars in an attempt to shake things up.

Mousinho was left fuming after the 2-1 defeat to Preston at Deepdale on Saturday (15 March).

Poole had a day to forget for Portsmouth in Lancashire, and the Welshman has opened up on his recent struggles in an honest interview.

Poole unhappy with his form for Portsmouth

Poole recently signed a new contract with Portsmouth despite featuring just 19 times in the Championship this season as a result of various injury struggles over the past year.

Therefore, the centre-back needs to step up now more than ever to prove that he is worthy of this brand-new deal at Fratton Park. However, this is a fact that the defender is well aware of.

Poole hasn’t been as impressive in the Championship as he was during Portsmouth’s League One title-winning campaign and the 26-year-old recently shed a bit of insight into his struggles.

The defender said via The News (21 March), “I’m really happy to be here [Portsmouth], I just want to get back to where I was. I just want to get back to the form I had.

“I’ve shown glimpses of it this season, but nowhere near where I was. It’s a confidence thing really, so I just need to look at these last games this season and show everyone what I can do.

“It takes time, a lot of people have told me it takes time. There are glimpses there, but I’m definitely not fully there – I’ll get there, though.”

However, if Portsmouth are going to survive in the Championship, Mousinho will need Poole to rediscover those levels sooner rather than later.

Poole needs to step up at Portsmouth

When he is at his best, Poole is one of Portsmouth’s most important defenders. Therefore, the former Manchester United man needs to find his feet again quickly, as his club need him now more than ever.

Surviving in the Championship is the mission, and if Poole can return to his best, with a four-point gap in their favour, there is no reason why Portsmouth wouldn’t be able to maintain Championship status.
